  • Parent Outreach Brochure to Encourage More Parents to Get Involved in Local Wellness Policies
    The Food Research and Action Center has produced a parent outreach brochure to encourage more parents to get involved in creating local wellness policies for their school district. Parents are a critical part of creating implementing and updating school Wellness Policies.   • School Wellness Policy and Practice: Meeting the Needs of Low-Income Students
    The Food Research and Action Center developed this guide that addresses the special concerns of low-income students in local school wellness policies. The guide is intended to supplement other tools available for designing school wellness policies by providing strategies that address the unique needs of low-income students, families and communities.

  • Helping Students Make Better Food Choices in School
    Action for Healthy Kids has released this report which documents practical strategies to improve students' choices of foods at school and identifies that schools will need assistance as they begin to implement their wellness policy.

  • The New Nutrition Standards: Implications For Student Wellness
    The California School Boards Association produced this policy brief in November 2005 on student wellness for its members.

  • California School Board Association Nutrition and Physical Activity Resources
    The California School Board Association has been proactive in providing resources to schools to develop their school wellness policies with the philosophy that "To better prepare students to learn, schools should provide education in an environment that gives students the skills, opportunities and encouragement they need to adopt healthy lifestyles."   • Promoting Fruits and Vegetables in Schools: Wellness Policy Opportunities
    The Produce for Better Health Foundation (PBH) (www.pbhfoundation.org) has developed this document to help school district personnel increase opportunities for students to eat more fruits and vegetables as part of the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Wellness Policy requirement.

    The Center for Food and Justice produced this checklist containing 65 policy ideas for improving school food, with legislative language for each idea drawn from policies that have been enacted or proposed at the state or school district levels.

  • Model School Wellness Policies
    The Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004 established a new requirement that all school districts with a federally-funded school meals program develop and implement wellness policies that address nutrition and physical activity by the start of the 2006-2007 school year. The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA) developed Model School Wellness policies to help guide school districts through this process.
